FSIN reports disease as cause of Lom-Ali Gaitukaev's death

Lom-Ali Gaitukaev, sentenced in the case of the Anna Politkovskaya's murder, died in the penal colony, presumably, from his long-term decease, reports the Department for the Vologda Region of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN).

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by advocate Elena Kharionovskaya that Lom-Ali Gaitukaev died in the penal colony on June 10. According to the advocate, physicians recognized the prisoner as Category II Invalid. A nephew of Lom-Ali Gaitukaev reported that his uncle was subjected to beatings in the penal colony.

On June 9, 2014, the court pronounced a verdict in the case of the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, an observer of the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta". According to investigators, Lom-Ali Gaitukaev created a criminal grouping. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Lom-Ali Gaitukaev died in the hospital of the penal colony No. 5 in the Vologda District, confirmed an on duty officer of the FSIN Department for the Vologda District.

Today, family members of Lom-Ali Gaitukaev have come to the penal colony to take his body for burial.

"His death was most likely caused by liver disease," said Elena Kharyonovskaya as quoted by the RIA "Novosti".

When commenting on the assumptions of the Lom-Ali Gaitukaev's relatives that he died from bodily harm, Sergey Sokolov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the "Novaya Gazeta", did not rule out such a scenario. According to him, even before the pronouncement of the verdict, Lom-Ali Gaitukaev had a serious conflict with criminal leaders.
