"Young Lawyers' Association" states gender inequality in Georgian politics

In Georgia, the level of women's involvement in politics is extremely slow, and the system of incentives for the parties to encourage respect for gender equality does not actually work. This conclusion was made by NGO "Young Lawyers' Association".

On December 7, Tbilisi hosted the presentation of the study "Gender analysis, the main achievements and challenges of the parliamentary elections in 2016", reports the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. The NGO "Young Lawyers' Association" plans to hold a large-scale research within two years.

The NGOs has noted that following the elections of 2016, 24 women gained seats at the Georgian Parliament (16% of the total number of MPs), and it is "an extremely low percentage of women among deputies of local self-administrations."

It is emphasized that "at the Parliament, female MPs show more quality at work than their male colleagues", and "at Sakrebulo (a local authority), they voice urgent problems."

Besides, according to the NGO "Young Lawyers' Association", women "remain 'loyal' to their parties", while "men often quit their parties."

According to Manana Nachkebiya, one of the leaders of the opposition "New Right-Wing" Party, "involvement of increasing number of women to the politics depends on the ruling party and its political will." Manana Nachkebiya has proposed to adopt a law to introduce a quota for women at the Parliament and Sakrebulo.
