Prosecutor demands to sentence Karpyuk and Klykh to long terms of imprisonment
Today, at the court session, a public prosecutor has asked the court to sentence Ukrainian citizens Stanislav Klykh and Nikolai Karpyuk to 22 and 22.5 years of imprisonment in a penal colony, respectively.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the criminal case against Karpyuk and Klykh is being considered by the Supreme Court of the Chechen Republic since October 27, 2015. On May 19, the jury unanimously found both defendants guilty. Meanwhile, the jurors have considered that Stanislav Klykh deserves leniency.
The jury found the prosecution version as proved. According to prosecutors, on December 31, 1994, Stanislav Klykh and Nikolai Karpyuk, being members of the UNA-UNSO (the organization is banned in Russia, and its activities are has been found by the court as extremist), were involved in the battles for Grozny and in the hostilities near the railway station and Minutka Square, where they killed at least 30 soldiers and wounded at least 13 others. Stanislav Klykh and Nikolai Karpyuk deny their involvement in the conflict in Chechnya and claim being tortured during the investigation. Both Ukrainian citizens are recognized as political prisoners by the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".
Today, during the pleadings in court, the public prosecutor has asked the court to sentence Nikolai Karpyuk to 22.5 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony and Stanislav Klykh to 22 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
