Advocate appeals to UN for help to liberate Nadezhda Savchenko
According to advocate Mark Feighin, the appeals for help to release Ukrainian aviator Nadezhda Savchenko have been sent to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) and to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that starting from March 21, the Donetsk City Court of the Rostov Region holds trials in the case against Nadezhda Savchenko, accused of the murder of Russian journalists not far from Lugansk. According to her advocate, Nadezhda Savchenko does not intend to appeal against the verdict of guilty, since she believes that her refusal to challenge the verdict will accelerate her extradition to Ukraine.
"The refusal to challenge the verdict excludes the possibility to file an appeal to the ECtHR. Despite my disagreement with Nadezhda on the issue, I have still decided to avoid the risk and launched a number of international procedures for her liberation. The first procedure includes the appeal to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. I've addressed it concerning the Nadezhda Savchenko's case, and I expect to get a result in April," wrote Mark Feighin on his Facebook page.
According to the advocate, the WGAD is engaged in investigations into cases of alleged arbitrary deprivation of liberty and in control over the situation of detained refugees and migrants.
"The second procedure implies an appeal to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders. I've also filed an appeal, and I'm waiting for the result," noted the advocate.
