Azerbaijani SC upholds verdict against Intigam Aliev

Today, the Azerbaijani Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by human rights defender Intigam Aliev against the verdict of guilty. The defence of Intigam Aliev intends to file a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 22, 2014, the court of Baku found Intigam Aliev, the leader of the organization "Legal Education Society", guilty of economic crimes. In July 2015, the Baku Court of Appeal dismissed the motions filed by the defence.

The "Legal Education Society" was engaged in rendering legal assistance to citizens, including preparation of complaints to the European Court of Human Rights. Readers of the "Caucasian Knot" gave Intigam Aliev the third place and chosen him from seven equal nominees in the contest "Hero of Caucasus 2013".

Today, Djavad Djavadov, an advocate of Intigam Aliev, has asked the Azerbaijani Supreme Court to draw attention to the fact that the court of first instance and the Court of Appeal "failed to provide an objective judicial investigation" and "limited the defendant's resources in defending his rights."

According to the advocate, the documents, seized from the office of the "Legal Education Society" on the day of the Intigam Aliev's detention, have not been returned to the defendant and this fact is "a gross violation of the right to defence."

Elshan Gasanov, the leader of the Centre for protection of political prisoners, has condemned the decision pronounced by the Azerbaijani Supreme Court in the case against Intigam Aliev.
