Karaulova's arrest extended till March 27, 2016
Today, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow has extended by three months the detention of Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova), arrested on the case of attempting to join the "Islamic State" (IS), the terrorist organization prohibited in Russia.
On June 4, Varvara Karaulova and Muslim Akhmaev, a resident of Chechnya, were detained at the Turkish-Syrian border in a group of 14 Russian citizens who, according to investigators, had intended to join the IS. Once the case received a wide resonance, Karaulova changed its name, becoming Alexandra Ivanova.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 28 a court in Moscow arrested Varvara Karaulova; her defence appealed against the court's ruling. On November 10, Karaulova, a student of the Moscow State University, pleaded guilty. On the same day the Moscow City Court (MCC) upheld her arrest until December 23.
Karaulova will stay in the SIZO (pre-trial prison) until March 27, 2016, said Yulia Skotnikova, the press secretary of the court.
