MoJ prepares to consider possibility for Nadezhda Savchenko's extradition after sentencing

After the verdict in Russia is pronounced, Nadezhda Savchenko will be able to make a claim for her extradition to Ukraine. Advocates of the Ukrainian aviator will have a chance to ask for the extradition of their client as soon as the verdict comes into force, the "Russian News Service" reports without specifying sources of the information.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Nadezhda Savchenko is accused of involvement in the killing of two employees of the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (known as VGTRK) near Lugansk and illegal border crossing. The case against Nadezhda Savchenko is being considered at the Donetsk City Court in the Rostov Region. The defence insists on her innocence.

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has included the name of Nadezhda Savchenko in the list of persons recognized as political prisoners.

The Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) notes that the recognition by Ukraine of the Russian court's decision is the essential condition for the extradition of Nadezhda Savchenko to Ukraine.

The "Interfax" reports that, according to Mark Feighin, an advocate of Nadezhda Savchenko, the essential conditions for extradition also include a written consent of a convicted person. Besides, at the time of receipt of the request for extradition, the non-served term of imprisonment should be not less than six months.

According to Mark Feighin, the defence will exercise the right to file a motion for the extradition of Nadezhda Savchenko to Ukraine.

"This is the only way in case of a verdict of guilty. And I have no doubt that Nadezhda Savchenko will be found guilty," the advocate has stressed.
