Volgograd: activists hold public reading of poems in memory of victims of political repression

In Volgograd, 11 local activists spoke in support of the project "Last Address" designed to perpetuate the memory of the repressed USSR citizens. At the Regional Library named after Gorky, the activists read poems of Soviet poets, dedicated to the victims of the repression.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that on September 27, readers of the Regional Library became witnesses to the action. They had a chance to listen to the activists reading poems by Anna Akhmatova, Osip Mandelstam, Varlam Shalamov, Iosif Brodsky, and Natalya Gorbanevskaya.

According to Maria Turovets, an organizer of the readings, the activists also plan to hold such readings in Grozny, Voronezh, Ryazan, Moscow, and Saint Petersburg.

The project "Last Address" is being developed with the support of the International Society "Memorial", and it is initiated by journalist and publisher Sergey Parkhomenko. The civil initiative aims to perpetuate the memory of the people subjected to the political repression during the Soviet era. The participants of the action implement memorial plaques on facades of the houses, which became the last lifetime addresses of the victims of political repression. Each memorial plaque is dedicated to one person. The motto of the project is: "One name, one life, one memorial plaque."
