In Chechnya, Court starts trying case against nationalist Alexander Malofeev

Today, the Shatoi District Court has started the first hearing in the case against Alexander Malofeev, a member of the nationalist organization "UNA-UNSO". The court hearing was held behind closed doors. The Court plans to pronounce the verdict on September 29.

According to investigators, in the early 1990s, in the territory of Ukraine, a radical right-wing militant political organization "UNA-UNSO" was founded. Ukrainian citizens Nikolai Karpyuk, Stanislav Klykh, Alexander Malofeev, Alexander Muzychko, and other persons became members of the "UNA-UNSO". The Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation has recognized the "UNA-UNSO" an extremist organization and its activities are prohibited on the territory of Russia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the criminal case against Ukrainian citizen Alexander Malofeev has been separated from other cases and it implies separate criminal proceedings in connection with the pre-trial agreement on cooperation. Alexander Malofeev is charged with involvement in military operations against federal forces and killings of Russian soldiers in the territory of Chechnya in the mid-1990s.

The trial in the criminal case against Alexander Malofeev is held behind closed doors. This was noted by an official from the Investigating Department for Chechnya of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF). According to the investigator, Alexander Malofeev has "confessed to the fact that while being a member of a group of Ukrainian nationalists, he served as a sniper specialist and killed several Russian soldiers in the battles for Grozny."

In 2009, Alexander Malofeev was sentenced to 23 years of imprisonment for the murder of two women during an armed robbery of an apartment.
