General Prosecutor's Office succeeds in seeking extradition of Chechen native from Slovakia

Today, Ali Ibragimov, a resident of Chechnya, who was hiding from prosecution in Slovakia, will be returned to the homeland. He is charged with attempts on lives of law enforcers and acts of banditry.

The General Prosecutor's Office has reported that in 2001, Ali Ibragimov became a member of an illegal armed formation (IAF) in the territory of Grozny. The IAF members acquired explosive substances, firearms, ammunition, vehicles, and means of communication.

According to investigators, in June 2001, Ali Ibragimov and other members of the criminal grouping shelled OMON (riot police) fighters of the UVD (Interior Department) for Chechnya of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). As a result, two law enforcers were killed. Ali Ibragimov fled the country to avoid prosecution, and in March 2006, he was put on the international wanted list.

In April 2006, the law enforcement authorities became aware of the fact that Ali Ibragimov was hiding on the territory of Slovakia. After that, the Russian General Prosecutor's Office sent to the competent authorities of Slovakia the request for his extradition, and it was granted only in this July.

"Ali Ibragimov tried to avoid extradition and appealed to the Slovak authorities with a request for refugee status. However, his request was rejected," reports the Russian General Prosecutor's Office.
