Volgograd: untreated sewage pollutes city ponds and rivers

The Volgograd inter-district environmental prosecutor's office has sent a statement of claim to the court, which obliges the Volgograd Mayoralty to organize collection and disposal of liquid domestic wastes. The office has documented numerous facts of unauthorized discharge of faecal-household sewage into the city drainage system, and drainage of untreated liquid wastes into city ponds.

"The issue of disposal and neutralization of liquid wastes is acute in the territory of Volgograd," Ruslan Gasanov, a deputy of the Volgograd inter-district environmental prosecutor, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to Gasanov, on the basis of citizens' complaints, during July and August 2015, his office conducted a check, jointly with the "Rosprirodnadzor" (Russian Federal Agency for Nature Supervision) and the Committee of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Volgograd Region, in the territory of five districts of Volgograd – Krasnooktiabrskiy, Dzerzhinskiy Tractorny, Tsentralny and Voroshilovskiy Districts.

"Numerous facts were established of inaction of Volgograd administration bodies in the sphere of organization of extraction and collection of wastewater; cases were revealed of unauthorized discharge of liquid wastes by enterprises," said Ruslan Gasanov.
