Participants of hearings in Yerevan urge public to reject constitutional reforms

In Yerevan, opponents of constitutional reforms held public hearings and expressed the need to consolidate efforts not to admit the adoption of amendments to the Constitution of Armenia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 13, the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan approved the draft of country's constitutional reforms. In his opinion, the concept of reforms is a progressive document and opens up broad opportunities for the advance of democracy in the country.

The hearings on July 24 were organized by Paruyr Airikyan, the leader of the "National Self-Determination" Party and a former presidential candidate. According to his story, over 50 people took part in the discussions.

"This is a completely antidemocratic project," said Airikyan, adding that Constitution is changed in case of a prolonged political crisis in the country; or changes thereof are the result of evolvement of new ideas.

Andrias Gukasyan, a political scientist, a member of the board of the civil movement "Arise, Armenia!" and another former presidential candidate, did not rule out mass disobedience actions of opponents of the new Constitution.

The aim of constitutional reforms is a transition to the dictatorship of one party, said Armen Martirosyan, a deputy chairman of the "Heritage" Party.
