After evaluation of damage, caused by flooding, Tbilisi residents to receive compensations
The Tbilisi Mayoralty is still keeping records of the damage caused by the recent flooding. So far, city residents do not know when they will receive the help promised by the authorities. The implications of the disaster are still felt even by the people whose houses were not damaged – electricity and water supplies have been restored, but the gas is still missing in the houses of several hundred people.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at night on June 14 Tbilisi was affected by a heavy rain, which caused flooding. According to official sources, 19 people perished. As of June 18, about 80 families, comprising some 400 people, affected by the flooding, were accommodated in hotels and private houses in Tbilisi.
It was also reported that the Ministry of Public Health of Georgia had registered 457 people, including 119 children, as victims.
On June 16, the Vice-Premier Kakha Kaladze said that the damage caused to Tbilisi by the flooding may reach 100 million laris (about 45 million US dollars). On June 17, the European Commission decided to allocate 3.4 million US dollars to Georgia as financial aid for liquidating the flooding consequences, including restoration of the affected housing.
Let us remind you that the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has launched an inquiry into the causes of people's deaths, believing that they could be caused by violations of safety regulations during the construction of the houses destroyed by the flooding.
