Residents of Budyonnovsk pay tribute to memory of victims of terror act of 1995
A citywide minute of silence was announced in Budyonnovsk to pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the terror act of 1995. The city also held mourning rallies and a religious procession.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 14, 1995, a group of militants from Chechnya led by Shamil Basayev attacked city residents and organizations in Budyonnovsk and captured the central hospital of the town. 129 people were killed as a result of the terror act. On June 19, 1995, the terrorists released the remaining people after the negotiations. The Russian authorities agreed to cease combat actions in Chechnya, withdraw the troops and let the militants to return to Chechnya.
More than 1000 people took part in the religious procession organized in memory of the victims of the terror act. The religious procession ended with the liturgy at the church "Joy of All Who Sorrow" located in the territory of the hospital, which was captured by the militants in 1995. A citywide minute of silence was also announced in memory of the victims of the terror act, the newspaper "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" reports.
The mourning rally in front of the ROVD (District Interior Division) was attended by about 300 people, including the leaders of the Stavropol Territory, MPs, relatives of the victims, and eyewitnesses to those tragic events.
