"Green Patrol" states environmental violations in Volgograd Region

Great-scale violations of the environmental legislation have been revealed in the course of the ecological expedition in the Volgograd Region, said activists of the public organization "Green Patrol". The ecologists have drafted 53 acts to be sent to supervisory authorities.

In the spring of 2015, ecologists drove more than five thousand kilometres, exploring the catchment basins of the Volga, Don and Akhtuba Rivers, and small rivers and reservoirs, Roman Pukalov, the deputy head of the all-Russian public organization "Green Patrol", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"During one day of inspection, we recorded several hundred local landfills, organized in valuable natural areas – in ravines, small river catchments, and two illegally working large garbage landfills," said Pukalov. "The landfill in the vicinity of the 12th kilometre of the Moscow highway covers 40 hectares – the steppe there is littered with garbage."

The Volgograd Region is also facing an unresolved problem of human habitation within sanitary-protection zones of industrial enterprises, Dmitry Levashov, a participant of the inspections and an independent expert from Nizhny Novgorod, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
