In Gyumri, Valery Permyakov to undergo forensic psychiatric examination

Russian soldier Valery Permyakov, accused of the murder of an Armenian family in Gyumri is to undergo a scheduled forensic psychiatric examination. The examination results can be reported in two weeks.

On January 12, in Gyumri, six members of the Avetisyan family were assassinated. The only survivor of the attack – the six-month-old Sergey Avetisyan – was hospitalized in critical condition and on January 19, he died. A Russian regular soldier Valery Permyakov was arrested as a suspect of committing the massacre. He is kept under reinforced guard in the territory of the 102nd Russian military base. According to the Investigating Committee (IC) of Armenia, Permyakov officially admitted the charges against him.

Today, a source familiar with the situation has reported that Valery Permyakov is to undergo the forensic psychiatric examination.

"The examination is being held on in-patient basis on the premises of the 102nd Russian military base in Armenia, and it should be completed in about two weeks," the source has said.

He has added that experts are to assess the mental health of the soldier and announce their diagnosis. "All the talks about discovery of Valery Permyakov's mental abnormalities are based on rumours," the source has emphasized.

At present, the examination results have not been available yet, the "Interfax" reports with reference to the source.

According to advocate Yerem Sargsyan, who refers to unofficial information, Valery Permyakov has been examined by experts and found sane.

"This is not surprising, since from the very beginning, all facts proved that his actions were deliberate in nature," the advocate has noted as quoted by newspaper "Kommersant" on March 3.

It should be noted that drug testing has not revealed any signs that Russian soldier Valery Permyakov was in a state of alcoholic or drug intoxication on the day of the Avetisyan family's murder in Gyumri.
