Vladislav Surkov: border between Russia and Abkhazia to be abolished

The border between Russia and Abkhazia is to be abolished on the basis of the agreement on the alliance and strategic partnership between the two countries. This was stated by Vladislav Surkov, Russian presidential aide.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 24, 2014, the new Russian-Abkhaz agreement on the alliance was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Abkhaz President Raul Khadjimba in Sochi. Meanwhile, Georgia has protested against the signing of the agreement.

On February 16, Vladislav Surkov made a one-day visit to Sukhumi, where he held a number of meetings with the Abkhaz President, Ministers, and the heads of the administrations and MPs.

When asked by journalists about the lines at the Russian-Abkhaz border, Vladislav Surkov has said that he "had seen the lines when travelling to Sukhumi." He has emphasized that the problem is to be addressed.

"Ultimately, the border should be removed. No borders are to stay between us, and this is provided by the new agreement between Russia and Abkhazia," the "Interfax" quotes Vladislav Surkov as stating.
