Armenia fails its international obligations to protect human rights, rights defenders said

The international obligations to protect human rights, presented in the UN's universal review, have been failed by Armenia. Civil society activists see no real changes in this area, said Armenian rights defenders in the debates "Human rights situation in Armenia, according to UN observations".

In the course of the above debates held on January 29, Arthur Sakunts, the head of the Vanadzor Branch of the Helsinki Civil Assembly, said that although certain changes were made in the legislation, no inquiries into human rights violations are conducted.

As noted by Arman Danielyan, the head of the NGO "Civil Society Institute", torture is still the main problem in Armenia.

In her turn, Colonel Nelly Manandyan, the Deputy Head of the Legal Department of the Armenian Police, said that the country sees progress in the field of defence of human rights. According to her version, Armenia took into account the remarks made in the 2010 UN's Universal Periodic Review.

Ovannes Madoyan, the head of the non-profit organization "Real World – Real People", has added that Armenia had adopted almost 95% of the proposals from the report of the UN Council. According to his story, the issue of enforcing these proposals remains open.
