Einullah Fatullaev called the Council of Europe to increase support to human rights in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani journalist Einullah Fatullaev, a former political prisoner, visits Strasbourg at the invitation of the Council of Europe (CE). Within his visit, on June 20 he conducted a series of meetings in various structures of the Council of Europe.

On Monday, on June 20, Einullah Fatullaev met Thomas Hammarberg, the journalist, who during Fatullaev's imprisonment twice visited him in the course of visits to Baku in 2007 and 2010. "I expressed my thanks to Hammarberg for his activity and support of civil rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan and for all that he had done for my release," Fatullaev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, commenting on the outcome of the meeting with CE Commissioner for Human Rights.

According to Fatullaev, theme of the meeting was the situation with human rights and freedom of speech in Azerbaijan. The same theme was in the focus during the meetings in Strasbourg with the ambassadors of France, Romania, Slovakia at the Council of Europe, and with Andreas Herkel, the former speaker of the PACE Monitoring Committee on Azerbaijan, and now the head of the Estonian delegation to PACE.
