Residents of Budyonnovsk commemorate victims of militants' attack in 1995

Today, the city held a mourning rally and memorial church services in commemoration of the 16th anniversary of the attack on the city of a group of militants under command of Shamil Basaev.

On June 14, 1995, about 200 armed rebels led by Shamil Basaev attacked Budyonnovsk, took 1500 persons as hostages and kept them for six days in the building of the local hospital without food and water. During the attack, 129 persons were lost; 415 more received various injuries; and 18 of them subsequently died. Over 160 municipal buildings and dwelling premises in the city were totally or partially destroyed.

Courts passed verdicts to 20 militants from among those, who took part in the attack on Budyonnovsk. Some of them are still being searched.
