Court extends arrest of suspect of Markelov's murder

The nationalist Nikita Tikhonov, accused of murdering lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova in January 2009, will continue staying in custody.

The "Gazeta.Ru" was informed at the Basmanny Court of Moscow, which considered the petition lodged by the investigation, Tikhonov's arrest was prolonged till November 4.

Nationalists Nikita Tikhonov and Evgenia Khasis are the figurants in the murder case of the lawyer and the journalist. Inspectors believe that Khasis and Tikhonov killed lawyer Markelov for his activities of representing anti-fascists and victims of nationalists at trials.

In the opinion of Mikhail Markelov, Stanislav's brother, Evgenia Khasis was a sort of "ideological inspirer" of the attempt, while Nikita Tikhonov, who got under her "influence and charm", was just the gunman, the "Kommersant" writes.
