"Committee in Defence of Freedom of Speech": less attacks on journalists in Armenia

As compared with last year, in 2010 the number of cases of physical violence over journalists in Armenia has more than halved, Ahsot Melikyan, head of the "Committee in Defence of Freedom of Speech", told journalists.

According to his story, the data at the disposal of his Committee evidences that three such cases were registered this year against eight in 2009.

At the same time he noted that in 2010 they registered five cases of rendering various pressure on mass media and their employees and five violations of the right to receive and disseminate information.

According to Mesrop Arutyunyan, an expert of the Committee, the above figures have political context: the second quarter of 2009 saw elections of the Board of Elders of Yerevan, and most cases of violence were fixed on the voting day - May 31.
