Representatives of Azerbaijan ombudsman claim pressure on inmates of Gobustan prison

Employees of Azeri ombudsman's office have made "a long-term - two-day visit" of Gobustan prison "with the aim of preventing torture and other cases of inhuman or degrading treatment", in the course of which they have revealed facts of exerting pressure on inmates.

The report of the ombudsman's office press service, submitted to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, runs that the representatives of the ombudsman "have inspected the prison wards, cells, isolation wards, meeting rooms, sanitary and medical unit, the food store, kitchen and other facilities". Additionally, they "have made a field investigation of complaints by prisoners and their family members".

The ombudsman's office employees have met the prison chief and staff. They have also talked in private with prisoners and studied their conditions.

"Some prisoners complained about physical pressure on the part of the prison staff, the prison conditions and the quality of food. They are also dissatisfied with the quality of medical service", runs the document.

In this connection, ombudsman Elmira Suleimanova addressed the Ministry of Justice with a request to eliminate the revealed problems and to provide her information on the results of the undertaken measures.
