Prosecutor's Office appeals against Grabovoy's release

Today, Grigory Grabovoy, convicted for swindle, will not get at large. The Berezniki Prosecutor's Office for supervision over law enforcement in corrective establishments lodged a cassation complaint against the court decision on Grabovoy's conditional early relief (CER).

On July 7, 2008, the Taganka Court of Moscow found Grabovoy guilty of 11 episodes of swindle. He was accused of plundering citizens' money under the pretext of "reviving lost relatives of Beslan terror act victims or curing them from heavy diseases." Grabovoy was sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment in a minimum security colony and a fine of 1 million roubles. His supporters asserted that his case was fabricated. Grabovoy refused to plead guilty.

In October 2008, the Moscow City Court softened Grabovoy punishment from 11 to 8 years of imprisonment, having partially satisfied the complaint of his defence. Besides, the fine to be paid by Grabovoy in favour of the state was dropped from 1 million to 750,000 roubles.

As reported by Stanislav Kolesnikov, Public Prosecutor of the above Berezniki Office, after studying additional materials, his Prosecutor's Office decided that "the decision to release Grabovoy was unjustified," the "Interfax" reports.

"The convict has served half of his term. He still has to stay behind bars for 3 years 11 months and 8 days. Grabovoy was eligible for the CER, otherwise the court would not have made the decision to release him," Yuri Timofeev, Deputy Prosecutor of the Berezniki Prosecutor's Office for supervision over law enforcement in corrective establishments, said earlier.

According to his version, Grabovoy had no remarks when in colony; besides, he compensated moral damage to the victims in his criminal case.

A writer Ivan Mironov, who spent several months in one cell with Grigory Grabovoy, found his as a "person unhealthy in everything." "He's unaware of elementary things; he is absolutely illogical, tongue-tied and obtuse person," Mr Mironov said on May 6 on the air of the "Russian News Service" Radio.

In the opinion of the writer, certain people were always behind Grabovoy and earned money from his name. "Grisha has nothing. He worked for meals. Since there's such a category of mental patients, who love sweet food very much: you give him a candy, you give a chocolate - and he'll tell you something; he is ready to smile and behave properly. He is a sick man who is used by others," said Ivan Mironov.

Besides, the writer supposed that Grabovoy's early relief is not occasional. "I think there's already some programme ready for him, since his name is broadly promoted, he has his mad audience ready to follow him. But we can only guess what the project will be," he said.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Sergeev, Grigory Grabovoy's advocate, rejected the charges that someone manipulated his client. "If any rich people stood behind him, he would have never been brought to criminal liability," he said.

Let us remind you that Grabovoy had declared himself the newly-come Jesus Christ, and founded his fund and his party. He asserted that he was able to revive people, teleport himself, cure AIDS and any gravity cancer, and remotely diagnose malfunctions in electronic equipment.
