Today, residents of Chechnya mark the Day of Memory and Grief for the nations of the republic; the holiday was established in 2011. Earlier, this date was marked on February 23, the day of the deportation in 1944 of Chechens and Ingushes to Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

The Chechen capital has held celebrations on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. In the afternoon on May 8 the central Grozny saw a solemn procession, whose participants carried a symbolic 68-meter-long "St George Ribbon". The celebration ended with a today's military parade.

At present, the academic week in Chechen schools will begin with the Russian and Chechen anthems. This was reported by the Republic's Ministry of Education. Officials emphasize that the innovation is aimed at increasing patriotism among school children and educating them in respect to the state attributes. Principals of Chechen schools express ambivalent attitudes towards the new direction of the leaders.

At least 67 persons fell victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus in April 2013; of them, 34 persons were lost and 33 more were wounded. These are the results of the calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and on information from other open sources.

The advocates of Yusup Temerkhanov, who was today convicted by the court for killing the former Colonel Yuri Budanov and sentenced to 15 years in a high security colony and 1.5 years of restricted freedom, have appealed against the verdict of guilty. In their turn, the prosecutors and the victims said they were satisfied with the verdict and consider it legitimate.

The family members of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was shot dead by the police at detention after the terror act committed on April 15 in Boston, face problems in finding a place for his burial. This was reported by Peter Stefan, the funeral home director in the city of Worcester, Massachusetts. After the protest actions held by city residents, it is unknown when and where the body of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, suspect of terrorism, will be buried.

At the exit post "Gerzel", located between Dagestan and Chechnya, power agents tried to detain Said-Khusein Tsarnaev, a photojournalist of the RIA "Novosti" in Northern Caucasus, a distant relative of Tsarnaev brothers, suspected of committing the terror act in Boston. This was reported to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by the journalist himself.

A native of Azerbaijan Ramil Ismailov died of a gunshot wound during a mass brawl in the south-west of Moscow. Two other participants of the fight, also natives of Southern Caucasus, were hospitalized with stab wounds.

The religious community of Muslims "Darul-Arqam" in Moscow, in the mosque of which 140 parishioners had been detained on suspicion of belonging to extremist religious organizations, has suspended its operation for an indefinite period, said one of the believers; however, so far there is no official confirmation of the information from the leadership of the community.

In 2013, the organization "Reporters without Borders" (RWB) included Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, in its annual list of the enemies of freedom of information. In Chechnya, the fear of the regime has become the cause of self-censorship, which "is switched on at full capacity", and, in general in Russia, attacks and attempts on journalists "are regularly repeated," the RWB reports.
