The Volgograd garrison military tribunal has sentenced junior sergeant Alexander Sobolevskiy, accused of causing his comrade-in-arms to commit suicide, to three and a half years of imprisonment at a minimum security penal colony.

As has become known to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, the panel of the Kabardino-Balkaria Supreme Court has considered the cassation appeal of the Kabardino-Balkaria Prosecutor's Office against the ruling of the Nalchik town court to invalidate the decision on suspending the investigation of the murder of Rasul Tsakoev, resident of Khasaniya, and returned the case for a new investigation. The new investigation must provide a direct answer on the guilt or innocence of Anatoly Kiarov, chief of KBR MIA directorate of combating organized crime, of Rasul Tsakoev's, death.

Yesterday, February 28, Chechen President Alu Alkhanov had a press-conference in Moscow. Apart from the information on the resignation of Prime-Minister Sergey Abramov, the Republic's leader made a few more statements. First, Alkhanov virtually confirmed the recent statement of Louise Arbur and Alvaro Gil-Robles, Commissars of the United Nations and the Council of Europe on Human Rights, to the effect that torture is applied to detainees in Chechnya, reports the "Nezavisimaya Gazeta."

On that day, the Elista City Court started hearing the case about cancellation of the outcomes of electing the Mayor of the city of Elista, the capital of Kalmykia, and the deputies of the Elista City Assembly, where advocate Andzhaev represented the interests of the claimant.

On February 27, 2006, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Ingushetia held the last sitting of the jury on the case of Muslim Lechievich Gutseriev, born in 1982, a resident of the Chechen Republic, who was accused under Article 209 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Banditism"). Having heard the defendant's last plea, the jurymen retired for consultation and then passed their verdict: Muslim Gutseriev should be acquitted for absence of proofs of his guilt. Gutseriev was set free right in the courtroom.

Abdurakhim Magomedov, a resident of the Khasavyurt District of Dagestan, who is co-chairman of the human rights organization "Civil Alternative", detained last October, is accused of complicity to militants. This was reported by a source of the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent in law enforcement bodies of Chechnya. According to the source, a criminal case was initiated against Mr Magomedov.

As of today, the whereabouts of two residents of Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, brothers Adam and Umar Dautovs, who are 15 years old, is still unknown. Today, the relatives of Ertshkho Sultanovich Khachukaev, born in 1983, kidnapped resident of the Achkhoi-Martan village in Chechnya, have learnt about his location. According to the family members, he was kept for two weeks by a power authority in the Urus-Martan district centre and now has been transferred to the Grozny pre-trial prison, runs the press-release of the Chechen-Russian friendship society handed over to the "Caucasian Knot".

Hearings on the murder of Paul Khlebnikov, chief editor of the Forbes magazine Russian version, will re-start today at Moscow city court, as the Moscow city court press-secretary Anna Usacheva has informed the RIA "Novosti." The hearings are to be resumed after a long break. "The court session will start anew from the preliminary hearings. The parties will submit their petitions, including a petition on consideration of the case by a single judge or by a jury," says Usacheva.

The human rights centre "Memorial" reports that a criminal case is continued to be framed against Mekhti Mukhaev, family member of an applicant to the European Court on Human Rights. The "Memorial" HRC reported previously that Mekhti Mukhaev, family member of applicants to the Strasbourg court, was unlawfully detained and subjected to torture in order to falsify a criminal case against him. Mekhti Mukhaev, born in 1958, is a resident of the mountainous village of Zumsoi, Itum-Kalin district in Chechnya.

On February 13, 2006, it became known that Osman Boliev, head of "Romashka" public organization detained on November 15, 2005 in the town of Khasavyurt (Dagestan) was released from custody against recognizance not to leave by a decision of the Khasavyurt town court. This was reported by Makhmut Magomadov, one of Boliev's lawyers, by telephone to the public movement "ChCNA."

Moscow notary Fail Sadretdinov, defendant in the case of murder of Paul Khlebnikov, chief editor of the Forbes magazine Russian version, has attempted suicide, reports the RIA "Novosti." The information comes from a source in the capital's law enforcement agencies. "Sadretdinov has made an attempt of suicide. He tried to cut his veins," said the agency interlocutor.
