Yesterday, on May 20, at the session on the case about liquidation of the Board of Elders of the Balkar People (BEBP), the leaders of this public organization left the hall of the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria in protest. The demarche was caused by rejection of the petition demanding to hold an independent expert's examination of the analytical report "On Situation with Balkars in the KBR (Kabardino-Balkarian Republic)", which had caused the pretext for initiation of the criminal case.

In Kabardino-Balkaria, in Baksan, an official spokesman for the Investigations Committee of the Prosecutor General's Office Vladimir Markin informed, "At around 10.20 pm two unidentified men made numerous shots pointblank from guns at the deputy prosecutor of the Baksan district, who died on the spot."

There is a problem with the execution of anticorruption legislation in Kabardino-Balkaria. On 18 May, this was discussed by the roundtable participants with the public engagement in the Parliament of Kabardino-Balkaria. As it was stressed by the deputy chairman of the Republic's Supreme Court Leila Zanikoeva, combating corruption affects only the lower- and middle-level officials, and does not reach the top ones.

European Court held that Russia was to pay 100.000 euro in respect of the death of a Chechen citizen
Today, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg fined Russia for 100.000 euros, acknowledging that the Russian authorities were responsible for the death of a Chechen Walid Dzhabrailov in 2003.
