Chechen parliament intends to raise compensation amounts for repression victims

Members of the Chechen parliament intend to request from the federal center that the monetary compensation to the republic's residents who are victims of political repressions should be considerably increased.

Currently, the amount of compensation to victims of political repressions is only 10,000 rubles which, in the opinion of MPs, is quite unfair.

"The federal authorities have declined the draft law proposed by the Chechen parliament to increase compensation payments to the republic's residents who became victims of political repressions up to 800,000 rubles. In our view, ten thousand rubles of compensation to the victims of political repressions is a humiliating sum. In 1992, when the law was passed, this amount was acceptable but now it can not be called compensation", stated one of Chechen MPs in an interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"When my parents were exiled, they had owned a house, furniture and cattle. In 1957, when Chechens were allowed to return, people came back to start from scratch, their houses were occupied by new owners. Now, they are offered ten thousand rubles as compensation. Is it money? It is only slightly more than 300 dollars to buy a house and some property. It is nothing but humiliation", comments Salman Zhudaev, 57-years-old Chechen resident, to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the official data, there are more than 173,000 people who became victims of political repressions in Chechnya.
