"Caucasian Knot" also reported that volunteers arriving in Chechnya to sign a military contract complained in January 2025 that they were kept locked up for weeks to be sent to the military operation zone instead of local residents who paid to avoid service. According to human rights defenders, coercion to sign contracts is practiced in Chechnya, and security forces may create an "exchange fund" from incoming volunteers from other regions.

At the end of January, Kadyrov spoke out against negotiations with Ukraine, stating that he believes it is right to continue the special military operation "to the end". On February 5, he reported that 20 natives of Chechnya had been returned from Ukrainian captivity, and journalists discovered among the released "Akhmatovites" a convicted sex offender and a former official.

The Russian Special Forces University is a training center organized by Ramzan Kadyrov in Gudermes, where training is conducted for volunteers to be sent to the combat zone, and the "Akhmat" special forces are based.
