A resident of Khasavyurt has been arrested on suspicion of murdering two women.

The court has detained a native of Khasavyurt, arrested after the murder of his ex-wife and stepdaughter in a local cafe.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", a resident of Khasavyurt shot his ex-wife and her daughter in the cafe where they both worked. Sources cited the motive for the murder as the woman's refusal to quit her job, which her ex-husband called "shameful." The 45-year-old Saida left behind five minor children, while 23-year-old Salima had three. Before the divorce, Saida was subjected to domestic violence, but after the divorce, the man continued to stalk her.

The court in Dagestan has arrested a resident of Khasavyurt, accused of double murder. "At the request of the investigator of the Khasavyurt inter-district investigative department, the court has chosen a measure of restraint in the form of detention for the accused," reported the official Telegram channel of the republican Investigative Committee.

The man has been arrested for two months, TASS notes, citing the investigation.

The native of Khasavyurt has been charged under two articles - for double murder (part 2 of article 105 of the Criminal Code) and illegal trafficking in firearms (part 1 of article 222 of the Criminal Code of Russia). The first article provides for a sentence of eight to 20 years in prison, while the second carries a sentence of three to five years.

Human rights defenders working in Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Dagestan describe violence against women in the family as established and institutionalized: traditions and customs predispose to it, beatings in public consciousness are considered "deeply family matters," and authorities also regard domestic violence by husbands as the norm, while victims of violence are not ready to go to the police.

Authorities have repeatedly sided with individuals against whom complaints were made by victims of domestic violence. One recent example of such an approach by law enforcement was the criminal prosecution of Jamila Garunova: the case was initiated after Jamila left her husband, who regularly beat her, and the woman, six months pregnant, ended up in a pre-trial detention center.
