Protesters in Tbilisi marked Ukraine's Independence Day with a march.

On the 635th day of protests against the ruling party's policies in Georgia, participants celebrated Ukraine's Independence Day by gathering at the country's embassy in Tbilisi, after which they marched to the Taras Shevchenko monument.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", on August 23, on the 634th day of continuous protests, those gathered at the rallies in Tbilisi and Batumi demanded a return to the course of Eurointegration and the release of political prisoners.

Today, a solidarity action dedicated to Ukraine's Independence Day took place near the Ukrainian embassy, reports Publika.

The police did not allow the march participants to proceed along the roadway with large flags of Georgia, Ukraine, and the European Union, so the procession took place on the sidewalk. The march ended at the Taras Shevchenko monument, where the police, using force, made the protesters fold a large Ukrainian flag. The incident was accompanied by a verbal exchange with law enforcement representatives.

Many participants in the march were dressed in the colors of the Ukrainian flag and in national clothing, thus expressing solidarity. Some participants held placards: "Be brave like Ukraine", "Peace for Georgia from the occupier", "Fight like Ukraine", "Russia is the occupier", according to a publication by photographer MO SE on Facebook*.

A representative of the Ukrainian embassy, Anatoly Khrystenko, addressed the participants of the action. "Ukrainians have chosen freedom. Ukraine fights for its independence every day with weapons in hand. The Georgian people know from their own experience the price of the struggle for freedom. I express my sincere gratitude to the Georgian people," Khrystenko stated.

The fifth president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, also attended the action and gave a speech congratulating Ukraine on Independence Day. "Our struggle and their struggle are the same. Today, all our hopes are placed on Ukraine's struggle, and we are all confident that this struggle will end in victory," Zourabichvili said in particular.

Later, the protesters moved to the building of the parliament and the Tbilisi City Council.

Protesters in Georgia have been demanding new parliamentary elections and the release of political prisoners since November 28, 2024. Law enforcement has conducted harsh crackdowns on protests, using tear gas and water cannons, and detaining protesters. During the protests, thousands of people have faced administrative prosecution.
