A native of Derbent was convicted in a case involving a terrorist cell in a Kalmyk colony.

The military court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Ramazan Kurbanov to a long prison term, recognizing him as a participant in a terrorist community operating in a Kalmyk colony.

Kurbanov was charged with participation in a terrorist community (part 2 of article 205.4 of the Criminal Code of Russia). This article provides for a prison term of ten to fifteen years).

According to the prosecution's version, Ramazan Kurbanov was serving his sentence in a correctional colony in Kalmykia in 2013 when a terrorist community was created in the institution. Kurbanov voluntarily joined this community and became an active participant.

"He adhered to the existing common principles and established norms of behavior, studied the Arabic language, underwent ideological training, and attended lectures conducted by community members," the press service of the Southern District Military Court reported today.

Kurbanov also delivered religious lectures to inmates in the prayer room and living sections. The investigation named the purpose of these lectures as calls for terrorist activities.

The court sentenced Ramazan Kurbanov to 11 years and six months in a strict regime colony. The punishment was assigned in conjunction with a previous sentence handed down in Derbent. Whether Kurbanov admitted his guilt was not specified in the court's statement.

Ramazan Kurbanov was born in Derbent in June 1971, according to the registry of terrorists and extremists of Rosfinmonitoring. His data was added to the list on July 3, 2025.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that at the end of June, the Southern District Military Court sentenced four other inmates of the colony in Kalmykia to long prison terms. Kerimulla Gyulmagomedov, Zaurbek Suleimanov, Sergey Kiselev, and Yusup Temirbekov were also recognized as participants in the terrorist community created in 2013.

At the end of 2025, the leaders of the Kalmyk colony received long sentences in the case of the terrorist cell. Pavel Bataev and his deputy Arthur Tsamaev, accused of organizing a terrorist community within the correctional institution, received 22 and 24 years of imprisonment.
