An appeal has been filed with the Baku Court of Appeal against the verdict of Martin Ryan, convicted of espionage for France, and Azad Mammadli, convicted of treason.

As reported by the Caucasian Knot, in March a Baku court sentenced French and British citizen Martin Ryan to 10 years in prison on charges of espionage, and Azerbaijani Azad Mammadli to 12 years in prison on charges of treason.

An appeal against the verdict of Martin Ryan and Azad Mammadli has been filed, Haqqin.az reported on June 8.

A preliminary hearing on the appeal is scheduled for June 11 at the Baku Court of Appeal, chaired by Judge Murad Mammadov.

As a reminder, Martin Ryan (also referred to in the media as Rian) was detained on December 4, 2023, and arrested on suspicion of spying for French intelligence. Ryan pleaded not guilty and stated that he "was deceived by the French intelligence services," according to his lawyer. Azad Mammadli, an Azerbaijani citizen who was arrested along with Ryan, worked as a lawyer at the International Bank of Azerbaijan and moved to the UK in 2023. Mammadli was arrested two months after returning to Azerbaijan. Information on the case is completely classified, while in Azerbaijan, such accusations are often politically motivated, human rights activists pointed out.
