The former mayor of Yerevan has been arrested in connection with a large money laundering case.

Gagik Beglaryan has been arrested at the request of the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia in connection with a case of large-scale money laundering and abuse of office.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on April 17, 2025, it became known that the case materials of Gagik Beglaryan, who was accused of illegally acquiring 27 real estate properties during his time as mayor of Yerevan and the head of one of the capital's districts, had been submitted to court.

Former Minister of Transport and Communications of Armenia Gagik Beglaryan has been arrested as part of a criminal investigation being conducted by employees of the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia, 1lurer.am reported today, citing the committee.

"He was recently accused of abuse of office," the publication quoted a department employee as saying.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported that Beglaryan's resignation as Yerevan mayor in December 2010 was preceded by an incident involving Aram Kandayan, an employee of the Armenian presidential protocol service. Beglaryan beat Kandayan for asking his wife to move seats before the start of a concert by opera singer Plácido Domingo.

Beglaryan's wife was sitting next to the seat reserved for President Serzh Sargsyan. According to official protocol, the Supreme Patriarch, the Prime Minister, and the Speaker of the National Assembly may sit next to the President of Armenia.

From 2012 to 2016, Gagik Beglaryan served as the Minister of Transport of Armenia. In March 2020, he was placed on the wanted list for embezzlement of state property. In May 2021, Beglaryan was arrested at Yerevan's Zvartnots Airport, where he arrived on a flight from Moscow, but was released on bail the following day.
