A Kuban resident was sentenced to a lengthy prison term for setting fire to a relay cabinet.

The Krasnodar Regional Court sentenced Daniil Khikhnyak, a resident of the Seversky District, to 12.5 years in prison for setting fire to a railway relay cabinet.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," arson attacks on railway equipment have repeatedly occurred in southern Russia since the start of the military operation in Ukraine. For example, the Southern District Military Court found Eduard Gladkikh, a resident of Krasnodar, guilty of setting fire to railway infrastructure and sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

According to investigators, in December 2024, the defendant, having accepted an offer to earn 20,000 rubles, set fire to a railway relay cabinet using flammable liquid and a lighter. Khikhnyak filmed all of his actions, the press service of the Krasnodar Krai courts reported today on Telegram.

"The defendant was aware he was committing a crime, but did not understand that the destruction of a transport infrastructure facility could cause disruptions in the signaling, centralization, and blocking systems, which, in turn, could lead to train derailments, collisions, and other dangerous incidents on the railway," the statement said.

Khikhnyak suffered severe burns when he set fire to the relay cabinet. He was promised more for this, but he never received the money transfer, as he was detained by FSB officers in the Krasnodar Territory.

The court found Daniil Khikhnyak guilty of sabotage 1 and sentenced him to 12 years and 6 months in prison, with the first three years to be served in prison and the remainder in a maximum-security penal colony.

The "Caucasian Knot" also reported that in March 2025, three teenagers from Krasnodar were arrested in connection with the terrorist attack. They are suspected of setting fire to relay cabinets in Krasnodar.
