The prosecutor's office has demanded an 11-year prison sentence for the defendant in Afrosin's death case.

The state prosecutor requested that police officer Dmitry Korchagin be sentenced to 11 years in prison for the death of Krasnodar resident Ilya Afrosin after he was beaten at the police station.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," a police officer in Krasnodar became a suspect in the death of Ilya Afrosin, who complained of torture after his arrest. In February 2023, the court sent the officer to pretrial detention. In April of that year, it was announced that the case had been transferred to the city's Prikubansky District Court. In June 2025, a court in Krasnodar transferred a former police officer, who was being held in a pretrial detention facility in connection with the death of Ilya Afrosin, to house arrest.

The prosecutor has requested 11 years in a maximum security prison colony for police officer Dmitry Korchagin, who is accused of the death of 32-year-old Ilya Afrosin, the Team Against Torture* reported today.

Korchagin is charged under two articles: "Intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in the death of the victim" (Part 4 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code), for which the prosecutor has requested eight years in prison, and "Abuse of Official Authority" (Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code), for which the prosecutor has requested six years. For all three crimes, the prosecutor has requested 11 years in a maximum security prison colony. The prosecution also requests that he be banned from holding public office and stripped of his special rank of police captain.

The criminal case was opened a year and a half after the man's death. The police officers initially denied beating Afrosin, but then began pointing fingers. Korchagin claimed that his colleague hit Afrosin, while the colleague claimed it was Korchagin. Neither officer denied being in the office and observing what was happening. One of the officers explained his silence by saying, "I didn't want to inform on my colleagues." Two police officers eventually testified against Korchagin, telling their version of what happened.

"Korchagin reprimanded him for his behavior and started arguing with him," one of the officers claims. "A very short time later, I heard a scream, a dull thud, and when I looked up from my keyboard, I saw Korchagin standing behind Afrosin," human rights activists cite the testimony of one of the witnesses.
