Three police officers have been arrested in connection with the beating of a detainee in Nazran.

Police officers in Ingushetia unjustifiably detained a driver and beat him several times. The man required medical attention, investigators said. A court remanded three suspects in custody.

As reported by the Caucasian Knot, in October 2023, four police officers from Malgobek were detained and arrested on suspicion of abuse of power involving violence. According to investigators, they unjustifiably detained a 31-year-old man and beat him, demanding that he confess to drug trafficking. They are also accused of extorting money and rights to the man's apartment. The case was referred to court.

In Nazran, an investigation has been launched into a criminal case under paragraphs "a," "c," and "g" of Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of power with the use of violence, causing grave consequences, committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy), the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for Ingushetia reported today on its website.

According to investigators, on January 10, patrol officers stopped a police officer in Nazran A local resident's car was hit for a document check.

On the way to the police station, he was struck multiple times.

"Despite the lack of legal grounds for the use of physical force, detention, or seizure of the vehicle, the defendants placed the driver of the vehicle in a police car, where, on the way to the police station, they struck him multiple times on various parts of the body," the statement reads.

At the police station, security officers again "struck the victim multiple times on various parts of the body," resulting in him requiring medical attention at a medical facility, investigators stated.

Three suspects have been detained, and the court has ordered their pretrial detention. "Operational support for the criminal case is being provided by officers of the Security Service's Operational Crime Department 1 Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Ingushetia," the publication notes.

As a reminder, in December 2023, the Supreme Court of Ingushetia increased the sentence of former police officer Amiran Merzhoev, who was convicted of beating a detainee. Merzhoev was sentenced to four years of probation; the appellate court reduced the sentence to two years in a penal colony.

Merzhoev's criminal case was opened after security forces detained Magas resident Timur Derbichev in January 2022 on suspicion of illegal drug possession. At the police station, Merzhoev approached the detainee and demanded that he kneel, and when he refused, he beat Derbichev.

In May 2024, the Magas District Court ordered the Ministry of Internal Affairs to pay 1.5 million rubles in compensation for moral damages to the man beaten by Amiran Merzhoev.
