Chechen authorities admit garbage collapse in the republic

Complaints about irregular garbage collection are coming from residents of different areas of Chechnya, and the republican waste collection operator cites a shortage of workers. Workers are offered wages that do not match the difficult working conditions, social network users are sure.

The republican officials did not comment on the problems with the removal of household waste in Chechnya in their official accounts, but complaints from residents today became the topic of publications by republican news agencies.

The first deputy director of the Onyx company, which was chosen as the regional garbage collection operator in Chechnya, explained the problems by a shortage of workers. According to Said-Khasan Dadakayev, the company does not have enough drivers and loaders - many employees quit in the summer, as they could not work in extreme heat.

“They work overtime, they get tired. After completing their route, they move on to another. We are trying to stabilize the situation somehow. I hope that we will soon get back on schedule and the complaints will stop,” the Chechnya Today news agency quotes him as saying.

Dadakayev added that garbage collection in Grozny is also hampered by road works. “Due to road reconstruction work, the routes of special equipment have changed, as well as the travel time. Because of traffic jams,” he explained.

Readers of the chpchechnya_95 public page, which has more than 107 thousand subscribers on Instagram*, called on the garbage collection operator to raise the salaries of its employees. “Wages need to be raised, it’s hard work plus the smell is unbearable,” idigprocom wrote under a post with Dadakayev’s explanations.

“The workers won’t have any problems if you pay them well, it’s really hard and dangerous work (...) Because of greed, there’s a shortage of workers,” san95cho believes.

“Raise the salaries so that there is an incentive to take up such work. Without them, we will simply drown in garbage and stench. Our garbage has not been taken out for weeks. These garbage bins are filled to the brim. Cats throw it around. The stench is unbearable. I am in favor of giving garbage collection workers and road workers who keep the roads clean in any weather decent wages,” said borzhila1208.
