Residents of Dagestan felt earthquake in Caspian Sea

Strong tremors were felt in Makhachkala and a number of other cities in Dagestan, and some Makhachkala residents went outside their homes. The Republican Ministry of Emergency Situations reminded residents of earthquake safety rules.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 occurred in the Caspian Sea at 23:33 Moscow time.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers, 28 kilometers from Izberbash and about 50 kilometers from Derbent, according to the website of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations in Dagestan, citing data from the duty officer of the Republican Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reported different parameters of the earthquake - magnitude 5.9, depth - 30 kilometers, energy class - 14.8.

"There are no casualties or damage, emergency services did not receive calls from the population complaining of damage. (...) The seismic event on the surface was felt throughout the republic," the department's official Telegram channel said at 00:30 Moscow time.

The epicenter was 88 kilometers from Makhachkala, the earthquake was felt in several countries, including Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Iran, according to a report from RGTVK "Dagestan". In Makhachkala, "minor tremors were felt on the surface, and the earthquake was also felt by residents of Kaspiysk and Buinaksk, TASS-Kavkaz reports.

Some residents of Makhachkala "ran out into the street after feeling the tremors," Baza reports. In the photo published by the channel, people, including children, are standing in the courtyard of residential buildings near a high-rise building.

At the same time, participants in an amateur football tournament that was taking place at that time did not even interrupt the match: during a strong tremor, one of the athletes lost the ball and fell to the grass, but the game continued almost immediately. Footage from a CCTV camera in Dagestanskiye Ogni at the time of the seismic event clearly shows strong vibrations of the ground and buildings.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations in Dagestan reminded residents of the republic of the safety rules during earthquakes. If possible, it is advisable to leave the building immediately after the earthquake begins tremors are felt, or take shelter in a relatively safe place, such as a doorway or in the corner of internal load-bearing walls. In this case, you should stay away from windows and stoves, and beware of objects that can fall from above or tip over.
