Sochi residents complain about problems with garbage removal

Residents of Sochi complained that garbage heaps accumulate near their homes and are not removed for weeks. The regional operator for solid waste management, commenting on the situation, cited the lack of container sites, careless citizens and the influx of vacationers.

On August 24, Sochi residents complained to a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about garbage heaps near their houses that have not been removed for weeks.

A resident of house 88/8 on Pyatigorskaya Street Irina Melnikova said that since the beginning of August, employees of JSC "Krayzhilkomresurs" have not removed a huge pile of garbage. "Calls and letters do not help," she complained.

A resident of a house on Alpiyskaya Street Svetlana Timofeeva reported a similar problem. "I understand that the streets are narrow and the cars are huge, everything is built up, it is difficult to get through... But why should this concern us, consumers, who regularly pay for waste collection and removal services, but do not receive this service. We wrote to the prosecutor's office. In response - silence," she said.

"At Sanatornaya, 65/2, piles of garbage lie for weeks. A mountain grows, a whole dump. And only after residents start calling and demanding that this mountain be removed, a car arrives and workers clean it up, but this is not always the case. “We spend a lot of effort and energy to make those we pay to keep it clean work,” says pensioner and long-time resident of Sanatornaya Street Maksim Efremov indignantly.

Olga Markova, who lives in house 7 on Novoselov Street, also spoke about problems with garbage removal. “You won’t believe it, but it’s gotten to the point that we can’t get to our house. The roadway is littered with garbage near the common containers near house 13 on Novoselov Street. It’s a real dump: used rubber, branches, broken chairs, tables, building materials. Cars with car sharing license plates just come and dump garbage here. These aren’t even residents of our neighborhood,” she said.

A resident of house 13 on Novoselov Street Novoselov Sergey Lyaskov confirms that the dump is filled again when it is possible to force the JSC employees to finally remove the garbage from the road, and not just from the container site. "I photographed the license plate of the car whose driver threw trash right on the road, and gave it to the local police officer. He thanked me, but there was no reaction," he said.

According to him, the neighbors came to the conclusion that they need to collect money for a fence and enclose the territory of the house with a two-meter chain-link fence. "Soon there will be nothing but fences everywhere," he laments.

A "Caucasian Knot" correspondent called a representative of JSC "Krayzhilkomresurs" and asked to comment on the situation with garbage removal. "We have contracts with residents for the removal of solid municipal waste. But the city has grown significantly, tenfold, and the number of container sites remains the same. Naturally, the load on these container sites increases and the time for their cleaning increases. People also throw out construction waste and garbage that we do not have the right to remove. For example, used tires, old furniture. This should be done by specialized equipment, but people dump everything in one pile. We have to spend time sorting and raking this large-sized and dangerous garbage,” the company representative explained, adding that the organization tries to respond promptly to citizens’ requests.

She also noted that the reason for the problems with the removal of such large-sized garbage is the influx of vacationers in the summer, when the load increases several times.
