The defense considered the psychiatric examination of Datashvili illegal

Activist Nino Datashvili, arrested in connection with the attack on bailiffs, has been sent for a psychiatric examination. The defense considers this decision a way to extend Datashvili's arrest.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, on June 20, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported the detention of 42-year-old activist and social studies teacher Nino Datashvili, accused in a criminal case of attacking bailiffs in the building of the Tbilisi City Court. On June 21, the court remanded Datashvili in custody, but the appellate court upheld her arrest.

Social studies teacher and civil activist Nino Datashvili, who was arrested after a protest in Tbilisi, was forcibly sent for a psychiatric examination by a court decision, the human rights organization Partnership for Human Rights, which represents her interests, reported.

According to lawyer Tamar Gabodze, there were no grounds for ordering an examination, and the petition initiated by the prosecutor's office was "completely illegal." Nevertheless, the court granted it and allowed "proportionate coercive measures" in the event of a refusal to undergo an examination - that is, the forced transfer of Datashvili to a psychiatric institution for 20 days, the agency "News Georgia" reported.

"The prosecutor's office has resorted to a new method of fighting activists. The basis for the prosecutor's request was medical documents previously submitted to the court by the defense itself in the interests of the accused. They indicated that Datashvili had been diagnosed with a spinal hernia and radiculitis, against which emotional lability developed - a symptom expressed in excessive emotional reactions. This is in no way a diagnosis - it is a symptom that accompanies Nino's serious health problems," Gabodze emphasized.

According to the defense, in the absence of evidence against Datashvili, the prosecution is illegally extending her detention using such methods.

"Their goal is to finish off Datashvili as an activist," the lawyer said.

The Georgian Prosecutor's Office stated that the defense presented documents reflecting Nino Datashvili's health condition, in which psychoemotional lability is indicated as a concomitant disease, in connection with which it was deemed appropriate to appoint an examination.

"In such cases, a psychiatric examination is always ordered," the statement quoted by the Georgia Online agency said.

Recall that protests have been held in Tbilisi for seven months now: since November 28, 2024, activists have been holding demonstrations outside the Georgian Parliament and daily block traffic on Rustaveli Avenue. They demand the release of all arrested supporters of European integration and the appointment of new parliamentary elections.
