FSB reports spy detention at Sukhumi Airport

An employee of a contractor intended to transfer the plans of the Sukhumi Airport and closed parking lot to the Ukrainian side; he was detained.

The FSB (Russian Federal Security Service) has reported the detention of a Russian citizen who had planned to transfer the plans of the Sukhumi Airport to Ukraine for committing a sabotage act. Law enforcers conducted a joint operation with the State Security Service (SSS) of the Republic of Abkhazia, the TASS Agency has reported today.

The suspect collaborated "with an agent of the Ukrainian special services, on whose instructions he provided the Ukrainian side with information about the nature of his work at the Sukhumi International Airport, where he worked as an expert of the engineering and technical service," the website of the FSB’s Public Relations Centre has informed.

In particular, according to law enforcers, the suspect had planned to hand over the layout of the Sukhumi Airport and of the adjacent closed parking lot used to receive official international delegations. He also said that it could be used to commit a sabotage and terror act by planting explosives in its territory.

The suspect was detained. "During questioning, he confessed to collaborating with Ukrainian special services," including collecting information about visits to the republic by officials of the Russian Federation. The Abkhaz SSS has opened a case on espionage (Article 274 of the Criminal Code of Abkhazia), the report says.

The Sukhumi Airport has reported in its Telegram channel that the spread data about the detention of an employee of the Sukhumi Airport is incorrect. "An employee of the contractor entity "SZIP" has been detained. The airport is assisting law enforcement bodies," the report said.
