Ulker Gashimova convoyed to colony thousands kilometres from Derbent

Ulker Gashimova, a native of the city of Derbent, declared as political prisoner by human rights defenders, has been sent to a colony near Kostroma to serve her term awarded within the case of calls for terrorism and extremism.

Ulker Gashimova has been convoyed to Penal Colony No. 3 in the Kostroma Region, the "Support for political prisoners. Memorial" project* has reported, releasing new political prisoners’ addresses for letters.

Prior to departing to the Kostroma Region, Ulker was kept at SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 1 in Rostov-on-Don, the “OVD-Info” project* has added.

The colony where Gashimova will serve her sentence is located in the dwelling settlement of Pribrezhny in the Kostroma Region. The distance from Derbent to Kostroma is more than 2300 kilometres.

The amendments to the Russian Criminal Executive Code, which came into force in 2020, stipulate that convicts have the right to serve their terms in a neighbouring region or as close as possible to their relatives' place of residence.
