Alexei Safonov sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in bribery case

In Cherkessk, a court has sentenced Alexei Safonov, the former chief of the Stavropol Territory GIBDD (road police), who became well-known for his mansion with a “golden toilet,” to 20 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony in a case on multi-million-rouble bribes for cargo transportation in violation of the rules and regulations.

Today, the Cherkessk City Court has found Alexei Safonov, the former chief of the Stavropol Territory GIBDD (road police), guilty in the case on large-amount bribes and sentenced him to 20 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony.

“The final punishment is imprisonment for 20 years with restriction of freedom for a period of one year, with deprivation of the right to hold positions in the law enforcement bodies for a period of 12 years, with serving the sentence in a high-security penal colony, with a fine of 100 million roubles and deprivation of the special rank of Police Colonel,” the RIA “Novosti” news agency, which journalist attended the court hearing, quotes the judge as pronouncing the verdict.

Alexei Safonov intends to file an appeal against the verdict.
