US Embassy warns its employees about threat of terrorist attacks in Tbilisi

The US Embassy in Georgia has disseminated the information about possible explosions in three shopping centres in Tbilisi. In response, the Georgian State Security Service has called on diplomats not to publish any similar messages without the consent of the country’s law enforcement bodies.

On May 7, the US Embassy issued a notice of a possible threat to US citizens in Tbilisi.

“Please note that the US Embassy has learned of bomb threats at three shopping centres in Tbilisi. The US Embassy’s Regional Security Office in Tbilisi has advised all US Embassy personnel to avoid those locations until further notice,” states the emergency announcement posted on the US diplomatic mission’s website.

The announcement provides the names and addresses of three shopping centres in Tbilisi, where, according to the US Embassy’s information, there is a threat of explosions. These locations include “East Point” on Alexander Tvalcherilidze Street, “Galleria Tbilisi” on Shota Rustaveli Avenue, and “Tbilisi Shopping Area” on David Agmashenebeli Avenue.

On the evening of May 7, the State Security Service of Georgia responded to the mentioned warning from the US Embassy stating that Georgian security officers were “engaged in checking another false report.”

The State Security Service of Georgia reports that its officers are taking all necessary and urgent measures to ensure the safety of citizens.

“We call on diplomatic missions accredited in Georgia to respect the activities of the services responsible for security, to show greater responsibility, and to refrain from disseminating statements that have not been agreed upon with the relevant public agencies,” the “Georgia Online” quotes the State Security Service of Georgia as emphasizing.

On May 6, US congressmen voted by a majority vote for the MEGOBARI Act, which proposed the introduction of large-scale sanctions against the Georgian leaders for rejecting democracy and moving closer to China, Iran, and Russia. The “Georgian Dream” Party sharply criticizes the MEGOBARI Act, initiated by US lawmakers in late 2024 in response to the decline of democracy in Georgia.
