Defence asks for Tofig Yagublu’s urgent transfer to house arrest

The Baku Court of Appeal has refused to urgently consider the defence’s motion to transfer Tofig Yagublu, an oppositional politician, to house arrest. On the 28th day of his hunger strike, the Yagublu's health condition remains serious.

Fakhraddin Mekhtiev, a Tofig’s advocate, who has visited him at the medical facility of the Penitentiary Service, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today that his client’s condition is grave.

"Tofig Yagublu underwent an X-ray and ultrasound examination. But the results were not reported. He complained of insomnia, severe dizziness and headaches, sharp pains in the stomach, and his vision had weakened. He looked depressing - his complexion had turned black, his eyes had sunken, and his speech was sometimes slurred. However, he stubbornly continues his hunger strike," Mr Mekhtiev has explained adding that today Adil Geibulla, the Tofig Yagublu's family doctor, was not allowed to see him.

Meanwhile, his defence has filed a motion with the Baku Court of Appeal asking to transfer Tofig Yagublu to house arrest. A preliminary hearing on Yagublu's appeal complaint is scheduled for May 6.

Nigyar Khazi, Tofig’s daughter, has expressed concern about the non-admission of the family doctor to see Yagublu. "The fact that Dr Adil Geibulla was not allowed to see my father today is alarming to us. My father told us that he’ll continue his hunger strike even if it ends in his death. He said that he chose death in the fight for his freedom," Ms Khazi told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
