Court values prisoner’s torture in Rostov prison hospital at 100,000 roubles

A court in Rostov-on-Don has valued the moral suffering of a prisoner who spent 71 days roped to a bed at the FSIN (Russian Federal Penitentiary Service) tuberculosis hospital at 100,000 roubles. Other prisoners who were tortured there are also seeking compensations, but the court ordered the FSIN to pay them 50,000 roubles each.

The Leninsky District Court has awarded compensation to a former patient of the Rostov tuberculosis hospital MOTB-19, who spent 71 days roped up and survived, according to the criminal case materials. This is the longest term of soft "roping" at MOTB-19 in 2020. He was awarded 100,000 roubles. The respondents at court were the regional branch and the federal FSIN, as well as Alexander Lyakh, a former deputy head of the above tuberculosis hospital, and two doctors – Anastasia Potorochina, a psychiatrist, and Darya Pozdnyakova, the head of one of the department.

On April 20 this year, it became known that Anastasia Potorochina, a former psychiatrist of the Rostov-based FSIN tuberculosis hospital, wrote an application asking for a permit to conclude a contract. Alexander Lyakh, according to the “161.ru” outlet, has already left for the special military operation (SMO) zone in Ukraine.

The website of the above court mentions several other lawsuits against the same respondents claiming compensations for moral harm to their lives and health.

Thus, the lawsuits filed by Alexander Monzin and Mikhail Arzumanov claimed 500,000 roubles each, but the court ruled to collect "from the Russian Federation represented by the Federal Penitentiary Service" 50,000 roubles in favour of each of them. The same compensation was awarded to Victor Kasarkin, who spent 21 days roped to a bed and claimed a million roubles in compensation.

Relatives of Roman Mikhailov, who died in the psychiatric department of the Rostov hospital, claimed two million roubles in compensation for each applicant. The court ruled to pay a total of one million roubles. The family appealed the ruling at the appellate and cassation instances, but the ruling was upheld.
