“AI” concerned about violence against protesters in Georgia

The authorities of Georgia have sanctioned human rights violations in the country, the “Amnesty International” (AI) human right organization claims in its report. Human rights defenders have called for an end to the violence, the release of detainees, and a thorough investigation into the attacks and beatings.

On November 28, the European Parliament refused to recognize the results of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and called for sanctions against the leaders of the “Georgian Dream” Party. On the same day, the country’s Prime Minister announced that Georgia would refuse to negotiate on accession to the European Union (EU) until the end of 2028. The above statement of the Georgian Prome Minister provoked a start of protests in the country.

More than 300 detained protesters were subjected to ill treatment by law enforcers. More than 80 people were taken to hospital with serious injuries, including broken bones, the “Amnesty International” claims in its report.

The AI’s report describes how law enforcers were suppressing protests using water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. The report also mentions searches of apartments, houses, and offices and arrests of protesters. According to the human rights defenders’ information, more than 460 people were detained, and more than 160 were fined. Courts have largely ignored evidence of use of torture and violations of fair trial rights.

The “Amnesty International” human rights organization is deeply concerned about the escalation of the protests in Georgia. The human rights defenders have called on the international community to show solidarity with the protesters in Georgia.

On December 14, members of the Electoral College elected Mikhail Kavelashvili as the sixth president of Georgia. Mikhail Kavelashvili is not an independent figure, and he has no experience in foreign policy, that is why he will not be able to oppose the decisions of the founder of the “Georgian Dream” Party, analysts suggest.
