Prosecutor demands eight years for defendant in case of Dagestani Dalgatov, who died after detention

The defence has asked to sentence Islam Atavov, a former policeman and a figurant in the death case of Kurban Dalgatov, who died at the Sovietsky ROVD (District Interior Division) of Makhachkala, to the minimum punishment; Atavov had concluded a pre-trial agreement, while the prosecution demanded eight years in jail for him.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 4, 2024, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) announced the completion of the inquiry into the case of 11 policemen of the Makhachkala ROVD, accused within the case of Dalgatov's death. The criminal cases against two other policemen, who had concluded pre-trial agreements – Islam Atavov and Marat Babaev – were singled out, Madina Alieva, an advocate, who represents the interests of the Dalgatov's family, has explained.

According to the case materials, Atavov played a "significant role" in torturing Dalgatov.

The suffered party asked to cancel Atavov's pre-trial agreement because, in their opinion, he gave contradictory testimonies to investigators, trying to avoid a harder punishment.

On November 5, the court granted the request to release Marat Babaev to the special military operation (SMO) zone in Ukraine. Dalgatov's parents decided to appeal against this decision at the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan and appeal to the head of the republic. Allowing Babaev to go to the SMO zone contradicts the pre-trial agreement in the Dalgatov's death case. "Babaev dealt with two other detainees, hit them once each, but didn't take part in the torture any more. According to witnesses, he then left the room and just watched Dalgatov being tortured," Madina Alieva has stated.
