Analysts comment on Govt's decision to reject "hijab law"

The political analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have disagreed on the prospects of the bill proposed by Vladislav Davankov, a former presidential candidate, which gives schools and municipalities the right to ban the wearing of religious clothing. Sergey Shoigu has actually supported the bill, but the Russian Govt is afraid of offending Muslims, Andrei Kolesnikov has suggested.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Vladislav Davankov, who is now a vice-speaker of the Russian State Duma, had offered to allow educational establishments to ban the wearing of religious clothing. The Cabinet of Ministers has rejected the bill on banning niqabs.

Andrei Kolesnikov, a columnist with the "Newtimes.ru" outlet, believes that the bill will most likely not be adopted.

On July 31, 2024, Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya, promised to shoot hijab opponents dead. On August 27, Sergey Shoigu, the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, said that in the regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD), radicals are trying to displace secular laws by replacing them with the Sharia norms.

Evgeny Minchenko, a political analyst and the president of the communications holding "Minchenko Consulting", is sure that the bill will soon be presented again. "The stumbling block was the words about 'religious clothing'. I believe they will approach it from a different angle. They will write, for example, 'clothing that hides the face' or 'preventing one from identifying a person'. In fact, everyone is for adopting the bill; it just needs to be reworded," he said.

Let us remind you that activists and politicians from the republics of Northern Caucasus criticized the proposals to ban the wearing of religious clothing.
